With the goal of achieving visual balance between positive and negative space, "Equilibrium" was built based off a single 3x3 grid system comprised of shapes that had very specific rules. As an example, one rule stated that a shape had to touch more than one edge of the square. As shapes were placed, so was value. If a shape were to be placed on top of another, the overlapping area would loose value and return to white.
